An SEO company’s biggest challenge is achieving the desired rankings for a specified website at the shortest time possible. Most of the clients would want to see their site landing on page 1 of the search engines results page as soon as they sign the SEO contract. A professional an ethical SEO company will honestly agree that results will only be surfacing after a few months of the project roll out.

It is important to set and define the business goals at the start of any SEO project as these will be the basis of success ratings or measurements of the results of optimization efforts implemented after the site is set to run live on the web.

  • Ranking Reports. Defining a goal to achieve a certain ranking for a specific search term should result to an improved ranking in search engine results page or SERP. The proper web analytic tools will generate the required ranking report detailing the measuring criteria and corresponding results.
  • Number of Links Added. While some business may still have the wrong notion about the value of links, the best way to measure SEO results is by tracking the lists added particularly the quality of such added links to your site. It is no use to have thousands of links from low quality sites as this will definitely not advance your ranking to the next level.
  • Non-Branded Search Traffic. This is a great way to measure SEO results. Monitoring of the daily unique visitors and charting the results over a specified period of time will give you an easy picture of how your SEO is doing. It’s equally important to exclude branded search traffic because few branded names hardly need optimization. And this is mainly due to the fact that the most popular forms of anchor text that others will use in implementing links to the site home page will be the organization’s name. There is still a disadvantage of getting all kinds of irrelevant traffic to your site, and this may not help you get additional conversions. That should be evaluated separately as well.
  • Visitor Engagement. This includes bounce rate, time on site and page views per visitor – these are all useful to keep track of and a good way of measuring SEO success. The indicators – higher than normal bounce rate or drop in time, of page views per visitor will help determine the action required if the site is showing to get less relevant traffic, for example.
  • Conversions. What could be the most important optimization result to measure than conversions. This will get you to see how the organic search traffic is performing in terms of converting into business. In a traditional retail business, the best metric is sales of a product. In online marketing campaigns, conversions can include ‘contact us’ requests, completed forms or widget downloads. A traffic increase of 50% that finally resulted to 30% conversion will easily mean a 30% gain for your business.

All of these metrics are useful in determining the effectiveness of search engine optimization being implemented for the business. The last three metrics would give the most accurate picture in terms of performance of optimization techniques and strategies.
