What Is Bad Neighborhood in SEO?

In real estate, a bad neighborhood can negatively affect property values – the land, houses, commercial development, etc. The same is true in the online world. A bad internet neighborhood is a place filled with sites of questionable and dubious integrity, some of which may be harmful and damaging. And if you link to sites in such bad neighborhood, it can cost your own site’s ranking to plummet down.

For many SEO Company in the Philippines, bad neighborhood should be avoided at all cost. Sites that practice black hat SEO, scraper sites, link farm, spam or malware sites – these are all residents of a bad neighborhood. If you provide a link to such a site on your website, you could be tagged in with other sites in the bad neighborhood and may suffer penalty as a result. On the other hand, sites in the bad neighborhood may try to inflate their search rankings by linking to your website, making it look like they are affiliated with legitimate web sites, which is your website, and some search engines may penalize your site for this as well.

This could probably be the reason why despite the correct and appropriate organic and natural optimization techniques implemented by the SEO company on your site, your site still does not rank high in search engines. Search engines could have tagged your site as belonging to a bad neighborhood.

Characteristic of a bad neighbor website include but is not limited to the following:

  1. The website contains too many link that do not belong in a specific niche.
  2. The website practices cloaking. Cloaking in SEO is a technique wherein the content presented to the search engine spiders or robot is different from the content presented on Internet users.
  3. The website has poorly written content.
  4. The website have numerous advertisements.
  5. The website contains spam.

While it’s easy to avoid linking to a bad neighborhood because you can control that, it needs constant checking of the outbound links on your site to see if there are dubious links riding on the credibility of your site. It sometimes happens that a domain expires and an enterprising digital marketer turned it into a link farm with illegal and questionable contents. Or there may be times when you link to a site in a bad neighborhood quite by accident because you did not know that the site is a spammy site. The once-valid link becomes a bad link in a bad neighborhood.

And because all of these can be happening behind your back, you should really monitor your site the way SEO company monitors theirs and their clients’ site to keep track and make sure that no one is dragging your site down the page rankings and most importantly, you are serving your purpose to the end user. And you can do that by using a number of online tools designed to scan your domain for bad links or by manually scanning your site for any unauthorized links that are linked back to your site. Hackers and spammers are quite resourceful in this area and can find ways to place links or other harmful material on websites and blogs.

So if you are not cautious and conscious about what is going on within and outside of your website, you might wake up one day not knowing why you lost your good search ranking and why your traffic had decreased. One of the things you have to check is whether a bad neighborhood has gotten access to your site and is causing your site all these trouble.
