The Different Types of Online Advertising

The growth of online advertising may be attributed to the steadily increasing number of internet users across the globe. With the potential of more users finding their websites on the net, most companies, big or small, allocate a sizeable amount for their business’ online advertising campaigns.

This trend makes way for many innovative types of online advertising which includes:

  • Banner Ads. While some internet marketing specialists doubt the effectiveness of banner advertising, this remains a popular form of web advertising. A banner ad is a graphical bar or button where text or graphics are designed to get the viewer’s attention and encourage a call to action mode. Viewers are invited to click through the banner and visit the advertiser’s site. This type of advertising can be static or animated and the most common format used is the GIF format. It is sold on a CPM or CPC basis.
  • Text Ads. This is common to newsletters and RSS feeds. Text ads on many sites are the dominant form of online advertising used by many website owners. For some products, choosing the compelling and catchy words are better than pictures or images. It can consist of a few sales lines together with a link or an email address for action. Like banner ads, text ads can be sold on a CPM or CPC basis. Text ads in newsletters are usually specified as a number of lines with a maximum number of characters per line.
  • Pop-Up Ads. Generally regarded as the most annoying type of advertisement, pop-up ads are still widely used by the larger Web community. It consists of a small window that ‘instantly appears’ over the main browser window as you enter or leave a site. It can contain texts, graphics, forms or email addresses. Sometimes, pop-up ads could be mistaken as virus; the reason small percentage of internet users are clicking on it.
  • Opt-In Mailing. This entails sending an email message to a ‘pre-qualified’ list of people or an audience that has signified an interest to receive information on a specific topic. Opt-in mailing is not the same as spam – a form of bulk mailing which involves sending of email or message to just anybody – whether or not they have interest on the topic.
  • Floating Ads. This is a type of advertisement wherein ads move across the screen. They can also float above certain contents. By clicking the ad, users are brought to the website of the advertiser.
  • Blog advertising. Personal blogs are used nowadays to advertise products. Usually, the advertisements depend on the type of blog i.e. fashion products for fashion blogs, food or restaurants for food blog, hotel bookings or flight availability for travel blogs, etcetera. This is a more targeted or specific type of online advertising.
  • Rich Media Ads. This type of advertising makes use of multimedia elements including sounds and animation to convey the message. This type of online advertising are usually promoted or seen on big websites or search engine like Yahoo.
  • Hybrid Ads. This combines the elements of text and banner ads to make a more effective pitch to site viewers.
  • HTML Ads. This type of advertising combines graphics and text with other HTML elements like pull-down list, check boxes or forms. Found to be effective in increasing traffic to the site, but this is much harder to serve.

Different forms of online advertising are made available depending on the need and the target audience of a business. Every business has unique online marketing needs that would best suit their type of business and their market. Considering the audience, reach and needs must be done before availing any of these online marketing forms to avoid unnecessary costs and get better response from internet users.
