Are Anchor Texts Still Effective for SEO?

Google made some algorithm changes that apparently included an update that “turned off” an anchor text-related classifier to give way for a more robust and cleaner scoring system. Google also suggested that there were more important methods of processing the anchor text with successful and better results.

With such changes and updates, SEO experts paid less attention to anchor text backlinks. Anchor text backlinks were considered less important in SEO as Google considers anchor text as less influential when ranking sites or pages. This led many to believe that anchor text is dead in SEO.

What most SEOs did not pay attention to about this update that involves anchor text is the fact that what was turned off is not the use of anchor texts for backlinking but just one of the classifiers. Search engines may have numerous classifiers when they evaluate web pages for ranking and Google was not specific on which classifier they turned off with the update. Still, what is important to know is that Google had not turned off the use of anchor text, which in turn means that anchor text is not dead and very much alive. In fact, Google even enhanced the systems being used to interpret anchor texts and find out the relevancy of the text for a specific search query and to the website.

Is Anchor Text Still Effective in SEO?

It is quite clear that although its role in SEO has weakened because of the abuse of many black hat SEO specialists who keyword stuffed the anchor texts, Google still use the anchor texts in evaluating or indexing the websites in SERPs. Anchor texts have notable influence in search engine rankings.

Using Anchor Texts the Right Way

Anchor texts should be used properly if one’s aim is to gain high page ranking from search engines.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Hyperlinks

Keyword stuffing – which refers to the practice of using the target keyword phrase for all anchor texts, must be avoided. You should avoid using the same term in all the hyperlinks on the web pages.

Relevancy

This is always emphasized by Google time and again. Most of the updates and algorithm changes were driven by a common objective – and that is to weed out web pages that are spammy and have no relevant contents. Relevancy is important not just in contents but also in link sources and anchor texts. You should pick phrases that have relevance to the content. And for this phrase to be effective as a keyword, you should use related terms or words to the target keyword phrase used in the anchor text; within the same paragraph where the hyperlink is inserted. Example: if the main target keyword phrase is dog training, terms like puppy, potty, dog, tricks, etc. should appear in the same paragraph where the anchor text is inserted.

Diversify Your Anchor Text

This is one important strategy when hyper-linking to external pages – diversifying the text phrase. Instead of using the same keywords, use unique but related terms. Google usually gives about 8 to 10 suggestions on searches related to your target keyword phrase. You can use those suggestions in your hyperlink.

Shift to Co-Citation

With the role of anchor texts diminished by Google, it may be a wise move to start shifting to co-citation instead of using anchor texts. Co-citation is a practice where a particular blog is mentioned several times in various external sources because of the value of information contained in its pages. Even without the backlinks, if the site receives a lot of citations from other blogs, it will enjoy the same SEO advantage.

The requirement for this to be effective is to provide highly valuable and relevant information in your articles / blogs which the readers will find useful and compelling, enough to make them repeatedly mention several times in their blogs, posts or comments. Google will notice this and will reward the page with good ranking value. Co-citation can help sites and blogs to rank well for specific keywords even without the anchor texts or hyperlinks.

With a little deviation from the classic backlinking techniques and the proper use of anchor texts, SEOs need not worry about anchor text being dead. Just learn about the new system of building links that will reward you with SEO link juices through the proper use of anchor text in backlinking.
